The ascendant sign in astrology is not the same as your sun sign. Whereas your sun sign is determined based on which sign the sun was in when you were born, your rising sign is the sign which was ascending on the eastern horizon at your exact time of birth. It’s a point on the first house cusp that sets up our entire birth charts. Keep in mind the 1st house rules all matters of self– from perception, appearance, identity, first impressions, among other “firsts” in our lives. It sets the stage for how your entire life can and will play out. The ascendant is arguably the most important part to writing horoscopes and interpreting birth charts.
Why, may you ask? Astrology is largely interpreted from a geocentric viewpoint– meaning our observations are based on how celestial activity is perceived from our position here on Earth. Hence, why our ascendant has to do with self-perception and identity. However, which house your sun and other planets will occupy are based on the ascendant. For example, an Aquarius sun with a Leo rising would put the native’s sun in their 7th house of partnership, relationship, and reciprocity.
Scorpio Ascendant Overview
Those with a Scorpio ascendant have an enigmatic and rather unusual personality. Unusual, in this case, is more often than not a great thing. This is a considerably fortunate placement depending on the native’s chart. Many note a “darkness” to them, though it has nothing to do with being a dark person. Simply put, we sometimes can’t discern if their low key eccentricity is a result of being too familiar with taboo… or not having such a word in their vocabulary. Amiable and charming, they make friends easily and have their ways of impressing. They have a creative depth that allows them to to be the best and succeed at whatever they set their mind to. What distinguishes them from other ascendants is how they build much of their identity around what’s unfamiliar to others— making them an exceptional standout, even if they may feel otherwise.
As Scorpio is notoriously known for ruling all things sex, it’s important to note how sexuality and/or their sexual appeal play a significant role in how they shape their self-perception. They can display some degree of eroticism, which, more or less can make them more attractive or unusual to other people. Physical attributes worth noting are their well-defined pelvic/hip areas and nicely built statures– typically giving them a smooth flowing walk that adds to their allure. Some can even have well sculpted bodies considering the amount of time they spend on it. Their libido is considerably impressive, which, sex in general is of greater importance to the native in comparison to other ascendants. Whether it’s obtained through sexual partners or themselves— considering they’re quite sexually independent and naturally confident. Style wise: dark/neutral colors (preferably black- with the exception of red), sleek, pretty much the more skin the better. More reserved folks— less fabric, the better. For women/women identifying: anything staggering the line of slaytanic Dominatrix Barbie and “slightly glamorous homeless look bc it’s obvious I had 0 intentions of interacting with you”. For men/man-identifying: a hybrid between James Bond/Magic Mike with a splash of this.
Keeping in mind this is a Pluto/Sun driven placement, these folks have a natural heir of power to them. Usually accompanied with a Leo midheaven, they have an ability to command any audience. More reserved natives still have a distinct magnetism, even if they choose to make nothing of it. This, too, can apply to the Virgo midheaven— adding the right touch of Mercury that offers more agility and and dexterity. Either midheaven allows them to be well spoken and intellectually curious.
The Leo midheaven is as if power and creativity had a love child— pushing them into power careers such as but not limited to: politics, law, public policy, film/music production, and big finance. Depending on the chart. For others, they feel their utmost powers in highly performative careers that extract a much deeper side of them, such as (but not limited to): music, literature, poetry, and the dramatic arts. More specifically, expect a darker undertone to their work— whether it be mysteries, true crime, mysticism, horror, and most predictably… you named it, sex. It can even be as simple as the native having an interest or fascination in the aforementioned. Those with a Virgo midheaven have a more technical element to their personalities. They’re more inclined to careers in social media, marketing, accounting, business, etc. To include anything vehicular or aeronautical, as Mercury rules all matters of transportation and information. In the rarer cases one has a Cancer midheaven, expect a similar undertaking as a Virgo MC— though they’re more inclined to the environmental or caretaking side of the aforementioned.
However, their powerful vibe may not be as physically apparent at first. Much of the power they exude is developmental, meaning they had to empower this area of their personality through trials and tribulations. Any MC/IC placements suggest the native could’ve felt (or still feels) disempowered from their childhood. Largely in areas pertaining to the home life and how they set their expectations moving forward. Whether it’s feeling like the “inferior” sibling, parents who valued work over nurturance, neglect, infidelity between parents, uncomfortably platonic family relationships, or anything of this nature. Divorce is popular in many households; however, it may have more of an impact on the native’s perception of family and love than they’d like to admit. Regardless of an Aquarius or Pisces IC, the native’s natural defense mechanism to this was to develop aloofness— which, of course is to protect their delicate desire to love and be loved. Using work and/or sociality as an escapism from embracing their overwhelming emotional and intuitive depths. It’s where their greatest power lies— needing to feel undermined to feel empowered. The underdog in disguise. A Taurus descendant usually suggests an unconventional style and mannerisms that can be misleading to others. This can also be quite a challenging part of the native’s chart considering Taurus is generally an unusual mix between eccentric and traditional. Which, is the case for any Scorpio ascendant because the descendant is the parallel point of the ascendant.
Additionally, ownership is important to them. By ownership, I mean having their own person, their own legacy, their own family, their own published work, their own business, their own friends, etc. There’s a certain relentlessness when it comes to defending what they deem is theirs— which, can be what drives them to success and insanity. Given their emotional demands are satisfied, however, they’re overwhelmingly generous, loving, and do quite well at honoring other peoples’ spaces. It’s in this case where they’re perhaps one of the least judgmental people one can meet, making them trustworthy and able to handle confidential information about others with ease.
Many assume the native has something to hide. However, it’s largely them discerning who gets to see the more vulnerable side. It’s kind of hard being… well, weird. Different. Enticing. People may not perceive the native like this as strongly as the native does themselves. Basically, people like the native way more than the native likes them. In less intimate situations, anyways. Giving off a certain vibe that can leave others misinterpreting their intentions or how they relate with one another. Until they reach a certain point of awareness, they also aren’t aware of how to communicate this to others due to a natural hesitance to be forthright with others when it comes to internal matters. Which, doesn’t help as someone who internalize themselves in the area of our chart meant to externalize.
Whether it’s Mercury or the Sun teaming with the Plutonian nature of the Scorpio ascendant, they’re undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. The irony— they can sense it but can’t see it. Having to learn how to healthily express their passionate outbursts through creative and intellectual outlets. Thankfully, they’re a force for good. Empowering transformation and taboos to bring a new sense of self-worthiness. Using figurative means of death, destruction— and more importantly creation— to determine how their story is told. They win battles in silence and continue to keep those around them second guessing about what they can versus actually will achieve. Impressing people with new creative inspirations and setting a vision for the future. Whoever has this placement who doesn’t resonate with the power factor, it’s only a matter of time until you do. Independence, leadership, whatever it is… they’re usually a step ahead.
