The penumbral Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on January 10, 2020 happens in 20° 00’ Cancer. Before getting into the astrology of this eclipse, let’s first note how we’re experiencing a penumbral lunar eclipse— which, is the first of four we’ll experience in 2020. The following lunar eclipses between 2021-2023 will be either total or partial. A penumbral lunar eclipse is when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are imperfectly aligned— but unlike a partial eclipse, the Moon doesn’t fall inside the Earth’s umbra (the shadow angled between Earth and the Moon). The Moon’s shadow is faintly visible. Disguising itself as an average Full Moon. Nonetheless, the symbolism is quite fitting for the long term implications of what this means for us on both personal and collective levels.
The January eclipse happening in Cancer is the whole “holding our breaths and biting our lip” part of the process. Feeling on the edge can put us in either crisis mode to where it seems something is collapsing. It, unfortunately, isn’t gracing us with clarity or obvious results. Opposing Saturn, Pluto, and Mercury— making it seem as if all odds are stacked. Remember with lunar eclipses that we naturally internalize. Any feelings of loss, despair, depression, anxiety, loneliness, or hopelessness are possible. Or, some may be feeling more down than usual, to include physical symptoms or ailments from the energy shifts.
However, it is offering us time. To breathe. To think. To feel. To process the potent transformations that push you towards destiny or back into limbo. Eclipse energy is always long term, so it’s important to strike a balanced between being present and also looking forward at the possibilities.
We’re anticipating significant changes… but what happens when our manifestations aren’t surface level for the next few months? That, my loves, is a recipe for self-sabotage we want to avoid at all costs. As long as we know what’s going on internally and the energetic landscape surrounding us, we can navigate this eclipse with ease.
We won’t have another lunar eclipse until June 5th in Sagittarius. The Cancer/Capricorn nodal cycle ends on July 5th in Capricorn. This January eclipse is what I’d consider to be the “graduation” eclipse for many— especially the Cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn). A cycle is ending. But, kind of like the post-grad phase, there’s lingering months where you’re laying low while being proactive. That’s how I’d describe between now and this Summer. So please don’t let the mainstream media convince you this is a horrendous time and to take cover. When really… it’s subtle manifestations [for now]. This is the start of six eclipses happening in 2020, as opposed to the usual four.
Now, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pay attention or make major changes now. What’s unique about this year’s nodal cycle is how all lunar eclipses are penumbral. We haven’t seen a cycle like this since 2002 when the North Node also moved into in Gemini. We won’t see another until 2027. Much won’t be surface level right now except the more vulnerable parts of ourselves— such as emotions and sentiments— which is pushing us in the right direction.
Now’s a time to be receptive to out of the ordinary signs. Don’t get scared— get prepared. Make major changes within. Take advantage of the calm before the storm.
The provided horoscopes work best with your ascendant sign, but it’s important to check Sun, Moon, and ascendant to get the bigger picture for you. All forecasts are general. Readers should always use their best judgment.
So what’s going down for each zodiac sign?

For Aries in general, the trouble making a decision or an effort is based on an opportunity cost. Whether it be money, time, energy, or a risk that even your analytical mind can’t fully calculate. Even if it’s good to open yourself up to others’ beliefs, a social media break could do you a lot of good. Perhaps your beliefs don’t even need changing— the conflicting side could very well be wrong. All you need is a little reflection and space from the issue. Transform that anxiety into curiosity.
